Steam Museum Visit

On Monday, Avebury class visited the Steam museum in Swindon for a World War II experience. Here is Lucy’s reflection on just one of the activities, the public air-raid shelter. It was really exciting. We were taken under a canopy of camouflaged leaves. Our tour guide introduced us to the shelters that you would have had in and around your house before showing us inside a public shelter. Inside was cramped even with 37 people. In reality 50 people would have been inside. We learned about what people would have done inside throughout the long night and about the bucket (don’t ask). Grateful thanks to Mrs Andrew, Mrs Heath and Mr Hedges for accompanying us on this trip. They even got to act as a publican, policemen and a lady of the manor when choosing which evacuees they could accommodate.

The children were a real credit to the school and the staff at the museum commented on how knowledgeable and beautifully behaved they were. Thank you Mr G for organizing this inspiring trip.
